A live professional course on how energy modelling works inside real building-performance projects — the methodology, logic, coordination and decisions behind the model, not just the software buttons.

What the course is about
Rather than focusing solely on software operation, WBEM emphasises the methodology, logic, coordination and decision-making behind professional energy modelling. It looks at how modelling connects with architecture, HVAC systems, sustainability goals, compliance frameworks and interdisciplinary coordination across the design stages.
Demonstrations use commonly adopted tools — EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, IESVE and DesignBuilder — but the aim is not to memorise software procedures. It is to understand how energy modelling feeds real project decisions, so what you learn stays useful whichever platform your next project uses.
By the end, you will understand
- Professional energy modelling workflows across project stages and building types
- How architecture, HVAC systems and operating assumptions shape overall performance
- Baseline development, benchmarking and compliance-oriented performance analysis
- Sensitivities to orientation, envelope, glazing, internal loads and system selection
- How to coordinate with architects, engineers and sustainability consultants
- How to interpret, report and present simulation results to a project team
Who it is for
Architects interested in performance-driven design; mechanical and HVAC engineers widening their view of building performance; sustainability consultants working with compliance pathways and rating systems; energy modellers strengthening workflow logic; BIM and performance professionals; and graduate students or early-career professionals moving into the field.
The eight sessions
Introduction to Building Performance & Energy Modeling
The role of energy modelling in design and construction, performance-based thinking, project goals and compliance pathways, and the modeller's place in an interdisciplinary team.
Energy Modeling Workflows & Project Integration
Modelling across project stages, early-stage evaluation, assumptions and uncertainty, iterative design, and benchmarking against performance targets.
Codes, Standards & Compliance Methodologies
Common performance frameworks, baseline vs. proposed building logic, compliance-oriented analysis, and certification pathways.
Building Physics, Envelope & Design Sensitivities
Envelope fundamentals; orientation, glazing, shading and thermal mass; performance trade-offs and optimisation opportunities.
HVAC Systems & Performance-Oriented Modeling
System concepts and comparisons, internal loads, schedules and ventilation assumptions, and early-stage system evaluation.
Simulation Workflows & Software-Supported Demonstrations
Turning project information into a simulation workflow: geometry, structure, inputs and assumptions, and reading outputs and trends.
Performance Analysis, Optimization & Reporting
Energy breakdowns, sensitivity analysis and optimisation, identifying improvements, and reporting results clearly to a project team.
Professional Practice & Real-World Application
Modelling in real projects: coordination, expectations and deliverables, review and quality control, and career pathways.
